UN welcomes the formation of transitional government in South Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon welcomed the formation of a new transitional government of national unity in South Sudan. The United Nations in a statement issued on Friday (April 29, 2016) said, “The Secretary-General welcomes the appointment today by President Salva Kiir of the Ministers of the Transitional Government of National Unity, consistent with the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan of 17 August 2015.”

The statement added the UN chief welcomed the moves by President Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar in achieving such an “important milestone” of the peace process. He urged the parties to immediately cease all hostilities and oversee the establishment of all institutions of transition. The Secretary-General called the international community to provide the necessary support to the full and timely implementation of the Peace Agreement.

The African Union also welcomed the formation of a new Transitional Government of National Unity, calling it a positive step toward peace in the nation.
