Ethiopia Reiterates Commitment to Work with Sudan, Egypt on GERD

meles alemEthiopia has once again expressed its commitment to work with Sudan, Egypt based on the Declaration of Principles (DoP) with regard to the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

This was stated today at a press briefing held by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Meles Alem.

The commitment of Ethiopia is based on mutual benefits of working on the principles of common gains, justice, reason, not harming others and cooperation, he added.

The construction of GERD is crucial for Ethiopia’s development which has suffered from series of draughts and calamities over the years, the Spokesperson elaborated.

Meles further stressed that the zero sum game diplomacy with respect to the dam is not useful to any country in the Nile Basin.

According to him, both the lower and upper riparian countries should be beneficiaries of the realization of the dam.

The Spokesperson mentioned the tendency of some in Egypt to stick to the colonial treaties which can no more serve the development endeavors of Nile Basin countries in the 21st century.

He urged the media to be cautious and ethical in using information the Egyptian media are disseminating. The domestic media should verify and deliver objective and credible information rather than simply reporting whatever it gets from the Egyptian or any other media.

Ethiopia, unlike many other countries, was and is transparent about the development activities it has been carrying out in the Nile Basin, Meles pointed out.

Discussing the visit of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to Qatar, he noted that it was “fruitful” due to the several agreements signed on trade and business.
